What’s in a Slice?

So, Mom sent me into town today for cleaning supplies and pizza—pretty standard errand stuff, or so I thought. Turns out Aldershire has its own version of a pizza place, complete with a knight statue guarding the entrance and a huge round table
shoved in the corner– you know, the Knights of the round table as well as shield shaped pizza pans holding individual slices in the warmer. Pizza Palace. Totally ridiculous. But also… kind of charming in that small town way.
Anyway, the real story is that I met a guy. His name’s Colin. He was working behind the counter, boxing pizzas like he’s done it a thousand times. Cute in that laid-back way, like he doesn’t even know it.
When I picked up our order, he asked if I was at the Némain place. It caught me off guard—just moved in this morning, and already someone knows where I live? But he wasn’t creepy about it. Just curious. Said he’d see me at school and hoped we’d end up in the same classes.
I didn’t say much back. I mean, what do you even say to that without sounding awkward? He smiled, handed me the pizza, and that was it because a couple cans in to grab their pizzas. But it stuck with me. The whole way home, I kept thinking about how easy it felt. Like maybe this place won’t be as hard to figure out as I thought.
It’s weird, living in a town where people already kind of know you before you’ve had a chance to say who you are-it’s kinda magical. But maybe that’s not always a bad thing. Maybe it means someone’s already paying attention.
Not sure if I’ll see Colin again. But if I do, I wouldn’t mind it. Maybe I’ll have to return for another slice. What a magical day.
