As a writer, I often find myself moving between two very different kinds of storytelling.
If you enjoy epic fantasy books, YA fantasy novels, magical adventure stories, or children’s fantasy books, balancing these creative worlds offers unique challenges and rewards.
Exploring Fantasy Worlds and Magical Stories
On one side is the Némain Trilogy—a world filled with ancient magic, hidden truths, dream realms, and characters navigating questions of identity, loss, and belonging. On the other is The Fantastical Adventures of Guinevere & Merlin, where two adventurous house cats stumble into magical places, uncover secrets, and embark on whimsical journeys.
At first glance, these projects couldn’t be more different.
Writing Epic Fantasy Stories
Writing YA fantasy requires careful planning and attention to detail. Every choice a character makes can ripple through future books. Plot threads need to connect, timelines must align, and worldbuilding has to remain consistent. Sometimes the smallest detail can become the key to solving a much larger story puzzle later on.
Creating immersive fantasy worlds, memorable characters, and compelling story arcs is one of the most rewarding parts of writing epic fantasy.
Creating Children’s Stories Filled With Wonder
Children’s stories ask for something entirely different.
They thrive on clarity, imagination, and heart. While the stories may appear simpler on the surface, crafting them requires just as much care. Young readers connect with wonder, memorable characters, and adventures that spark their curiosity. Every scene needs to feel engaging without becoming overwhelming.
Writing children’s fantasy stories also means creating experiences that encourage creativity, curiosity, and a lifelong love of reading.
Moving Between Fantasy and Children’s Stories
Moving between these two creative spaces can be challenging.
There are days when I sit down to work on Roses and Nightmares and end up brainstorming a new adventure for Guinevere and Merlin instead. Other times, while outlining a children’s story, an unexpected solution to a fantasy plot problem suddenly appears.
How Different Stories Inspire Each Other
Over time, I’ve learned to embrace that process.
Rather than forcing myself to focus on only one project, I’ve discovered that each story helps fuel the other. When one feels difficult, switching to a different creative world often helps me regain momentum. The lighter, playful nature of children’s fiction can be a welcome break from the complexity of fantasy, while returning to fantasy after writing for younger readers often feels fresh and inspiring.
This creative balance has become an important part of my writing process and helps me stay productive across multiple projects.
A Fantasy Author’s Challenge
One challenge remains, though.
I wish I could illustrate.
Like many children’s authors, I can vividly picture every scene. I can imagine Gwen’s excitement when she discovers something magical, Merlin’s determination as he explores a hidden passage, and the colorful worlds they encounter along the way.
The problem is that imagining illustrations and creating them are very different talents.
While it can be frustrating at times, it’s also a reminder that storytelling is often a collaborative art. A talented illustrator brings their own creativity to a story, adding layers of personality and visual magic that can elevate the entire experience.
Continuing to Write Fantasy and Magical Stories
So for now, I’ll keep doing what I do best.
I’ll keep writing.
I’ll continue building magical worlds, following curious cats into hidden places, and guiding young heroes through extraordinary adventures.
Because whether I’m writing for teenagers discovering ancient mysteries or younger readers opening the door to their first magical adventure, my goal remains the same:
To inspire a sense of wonder.
And that’s something worth writing for every single day.
