I survived Day One.

My first day of school

The building is smaller than my old school, but somehow it still smelled exactly the same—paper, cologne, and teenagers who forgot deodorant. The hum of computers and hallway chatter blended with the heating system’s low drone, like background noise in a movie I wasn’t sure I was starring in yet.

I didn’t know what to expect, but it turns out being “the girl who moved into the Némain house” is basically my new identity. I must’ve said “yes, that’s us” at least twenty times today. Everyone seems weirdly fascinated by the house. I guess it’s been empty for a while, and now I’m the ghost who moved in.

I survived chemistry

Colin—who I’d only met briefly before—was in two of my classes: Chemistry and Contemporary World Problems. He slid over to make room for me both times, which was honestly the nicest thing anyone could’ve done today.

He introduced me to his friends at lunch: Dylan, Gadge, and Cat. They were loud and funny and asked me about California like it was some mythical land of eternal sunshine and beach parties. I had to break it to them that no, I didn’t surf to school and yes, San Francisco gets foggy and cold. Gadge looked personally betrayed.

I survived lunch

Lunch was… different. No cafeteria, just pickup windows and a student store that sells bubbly water and Cup-O-Noodles. I grabbed a sub and found a table, and just as I sat down, Colin and his crew swarmed me like I was already one of them. It felt good. Like maybe I won’t be invisible here.

Cat snatched my schedule and announced I had PE and Horticulture with her. Turns out I’m also in Geometry with Dylan and Fine Art with Cat. Colin’s in that class too. It’s like I accidentally landed in the middle of a friend group. Not complaining.

I survived horticulture

Horticulture was my favorite class today. Mr. Doyle shook my hand and said he knew my dad. That hit me hard. He said my family helped found Aldershire. I didn’t know that. I didn’t know a lot of things, apparently. He looked at me like he was remembering something, or maybe wondering something. I caught his eye once and thought I saw a question there. Maybe I’ll ask him about Dad sometime.

I survived the day

After school, I picked up the girls and we headed home. Mom was painting the kitchen a bright yellow, and the whole house smelled like citrus and fresh beginnings. We had dinner together—chicken and potatoes—and talked about our day like we used to before the move. Daisy dove into her homework, Poppy tried to avoid hers, and I helped out while Mom finished painting.

Later, when things quieted down, Mom asked what I’d learned. I told her I found out a little more about Dad’s past here. There’s more to uncover, and I want to know it all. This town holds pieces of him, and maybe pieces of me too.

So yeah. First day: not terrible. Maybe even kind of good. And… I survived
