We Moved into a House that Definitely has opinions

Opinions

By Daisy (logical observer 📚)
& Poppy (chief excitement officer ✨🧃🐸)

🌼 Daisy Says:

Moving is an exercise in controlled chaos. 📦

One moment you are living in a familiar place where you know exactly which drawer contains the scissors ✂️, and the next you are standing in a house full of boxes wondering why anyone owns seventeen extension cords and absolutely no idea where the toothpaste went. 😑

Our new home in Aldershire is… large.

Much larger than our old cottage.

Large enough that Poppy and I were each offered our own room.

We declined.

Not because we are incapable of independence (we are perfectly capable, thank you 😌), but because we are twins and have always shared space. It seemed illogical to change that simply because the house allowed it.

Also, new houses sound different at night.

It is scientifically advisable to face such acoustical adjustments together. 🔬

🌸 Poppy Says:

Also ALSO, if you get scared in a new house, you can’t very well yell across the hallway like:

“DAISY!! WAS THAT A GHOST OR THE HEATER?!” 👻

Much better to just roll over and ask.

Efficiency. 👍

🌼 Daisy Says:

The first day consisted primarily of unpacking, reorganizing, and attempting to understand why previous generations stored so many mysterious objects instead of throwing them away. 📦📚🕯️

Maggie immediately claimed the attic as her room (a decision she negotiated before we even arrived 🙄), leaving us downstairs with music, boxes, and Mom trying to assemble bunk beds while the radio played.

The house is old.

Historically old.

The kind of old where every stair sounds like it is considering telling you a story but hasn’t decided whether you’re trustworthy yet. 👀

🌸 Poppy Says:

You forgot the important part.

The dust. 😭

There is enough dust here to build a second, slightly smaller house.

If dust had a personality, this dust would be the dramatic Victorian type that says things like:

“I have seen generations come and go…” 🕯️

🌼 Daisy Says:

Poppy attempted to write her name in it.

For documentation purposes.

🌸 Poppy Says:

It was for SCIENCE. 🔬✨

🌼 Daisy Says:

Our first night we did not sleep in our rooms at all.

Instead, we all camped out together in the living room surrounded by half-unpacked boxes and the general feeling that everything in our lives had shifted very quickly.

Mom read. 📖

Maggie asked questions about why we moved here.

Poppy fell asleep mid-sentence. 😴

🌸 Poppy Says:

Because moving is exhausting.

Also because the house is really quiet.

Not normal quiet.

Listening quiet. 👀🌙

🌼 Daisy Says:

That is not an evidence-based observation.

🌸 Poppy Says:

You didn’t hear it?

🌼 Daisy Says:

I heard settling wood and structural acoustics typical of older architecture.

🌸 Poppy Says:

Yes.

That.

But… friendlier. 😊

🌼 Daisy Says:

There is something unusual about living in a place that already belonged to your family long before you arrived.

This house is not just new to us — it is old to everyone else. It has been part of this town for generations, and that gives it a feeling of continuity rather than novelty.

Like we are stepping into a story that was already in progress. 🌲✨📖

🌸 Poppy Says:

Which is either magical…

or means we are going to find something amazing in a box labeled:

“Definitely Not Important.” 📦✨

🌼 Daisy Says:

We will absolutely open every box.

Systematically.

With an inventory list. 📝

🌸 Poppy Says:

And snacks.

Important detail. 🍪🧃

🌼🌸 Together:

So that’s how our life in Aldershire began:

✨ With unpacking.
✨ With questions.
✨ With one very old house.
✨ And with the feeling that maybe this place remembers more than we do.

We’ll keep you posted.

Because if this house has secrets, we fully intend to make friends with them.

(Respectfully. And with labels.) 🏷️✨

Between Worlds and Words Podcast

Stories don’t come from nowhere—and neither do the people who write them.

Between Worlds and Words is my new podcast where I explore the space between real life and storytelling: the experiences that shape my characters, the emotions hidden beneath fantasy, the realities behind writing, and the complicated moments that quietly become fiction.

From discussions about The Némain Trilogy, Flower Power, The Fantastical Adventures of Guinevere and Merlin, and upcoming nonfiction projects to reflections on identity, belonging, neurodivergence, teaching, creativity, and healing through storytelling, this podcast is a more personal look into the worlds behind the books.

You’ll also find writing updates, behind-the-scenes thoughts, sneak peeks at upcoming releases, and conversations about the very real experiences that inspire the stories I tell.
